Illustrated Dictionary of Midwifery

by Nicola V. Winson and Sandra McDonald

[2005, UK: Elsevier, 296 pages, paperback.]

[Review first published in Midwifery Today Issue 88, Winter 2008, © 2008, Midwifery Today, Inc. Review by Cheryl K. Smith.]

This slim, nearly pocket-size dictionary contains relevant midwifery terminology, abbreviations and illustrations for easy reference in classroom or in the field. It also contains 16 appendices with quick-reference material, ranging from Apgar scoring, to normal blood/urine values, conversions, labor signs and tests. Because it was published in and intended for a UK audience, some of the additional information is not relevant to midwives in the US or other countries.

Reviewer Cheryl K. Smith is an editor and a writer who gave up lawyering to raise miniature dairy goats in the coast range of Oregon. She is currently working on a book on goat health care (www.goathealthcare.com).
